about CLAY

Clay is a messy transsexual writing plays
about messy transsexuals for fellow messy transsexuals.

Clay Baker-Lerner (they/them) is a theatre-maker, theatre-doer, multi-hyphenate (playwright, actor, director, dramaturg, stage manager, designer, educator) born in Boston, MA and based in Brooklyn, NY. They hold a BFA in Dramatic Arts with a concentration in playwrighting from The New School. They are a proud member of the Dramatist Guild.

Clay writes plays for trans girls who look like boys and trans boys who look like girls. They write plays for trans people who are the heroes, and more importantly the villains of their own stories. They write plays for trans people from the Northeast who’s two favorite pastimes are arguing and feeling guilty. They write plays for anti-zionist Jews who are pro-prison abolition. They write plays for crazy evil bitches you can’t help but fear, admire, and hopefully even love. They write plays for their theatre-making friends trying to work on projects that actually represent them. They write plays as a form of rumination they can pick up and put down as they please. They write plays that are darkly comedic, surrealist, magical, and grounded in truth.

Clay's one-act play, TRANSCENDENCE AIRWAYS premiered on August 11th, 2024 at The Chain Theater in Manhattan, NY. Their BFA thesis capstone play, AM I CAIT?  performed in The Glassbox Theater on April 7th and 8th, 2024 at The New School in Manhattan, NY. Their original play PUSSY PROBLEMS premiered on December 7th, 2023 directed by Myah Durham, produced by PLAYGROUND, at The New School in Manhattan, NY. And their original play BOCCE!: The Alphabet Mafia’s Guide to Bocce Ball, Collegiate Cheer, Spilling Secrets, and Surviving the Great Molasses Flood premiered on July 28th, 2023 directed by Achille Vann Ricca, at Creative Arts at Park in Brookline, MA.
